Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund Frequently Asked Questions

What is UCO’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund?
The COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund offers limited emergency financial assistance to currently enrolled students who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses because of temporary hardship related to the coronavirus pandemic. By helping meet their immediate needs, this avenue for assistance can give our UCO students the ability to overcome the difficult setbacks that are being exacerbated by COVID-19.

Who is behind UCO’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund?

The UCO Foundation is hosting the crowdfunding site and is working in conjunction with the university and the community to raise needed funds for students. The Office of Enrollment and Student Success is working with students on awarding funds.

What steps has the UCO Foundation taken to ensure the success of the campaign?

The UCO Foundation has generously matched $30,000, while the University of Central Oklahoma Student Association (UCOSA) is matching $10,000, the UCO President's Office is matching $10,000, and each dean provided money from their college's Annual Fund totaling $13,000.

What is the campaign goal for the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund?

The goal is to raise as much money as possible to help our students offset the cost of any hardship they may experience due to COVID-19. This could be to pay for a month’s rent, groceries or bills that may otherwise not be possible due to the sudden loss of a job.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, your donation is 100% tax-deductible. The UCO Foundation is a qualified 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. Your gift is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

How much of my donation will each student receive?

Currently, the need of our students is exceeding the amount we have raised. We are currently awarding students on a case-by-case basis.

How will you decide who receives the money?

The Office of Enrollment and Student Success has a rubrik in place to determine how to award funds based on figures from the Department of Human Services.

How do I know awarded students will be spending the money appropriately?

These times are difficult for all of us. The UCO Foundation and Office of Enrollment and Student Success are grateful for the outreach from our community and desire to help our students as they face unparalleled challenges. You have entrusted us with a responsibility that we take seriously and so do our students. Each student is required to complete an application that is reviewed prior to funding that helps us understand their circumstances and plan. The fund is designated to offset short-term financial need and is not intended to replace or supplement financial aid.

What happens to any leftover funds?

Currently, the need is so great on behalf of our students that our concern is not having enough funds available to meet the need. In the unlikely situation that not all funds were needed, the funds will be used for any upcoming student emergency needs.

Can I choose a specific student or college to receive my donation?

Due to privacy protections and IRS guidelines, you cannot choose specific students to receive your donation. Rest assured that students from across the university will benefit from your generosity.

How do you prevent a fraudulent claim?

The UCO Foundation will be relying on trusted partners overseeing disbursement of funds in the Office of Enrollment and Student Success. Their office is working hard to identify students in need of financial assistance during this difficult time. The personal identity and need of each student will be carefully verified before any funds are distributed.

Does the UCO Foundation retain any fees associated with this campaign?

The UCO Foundation retains a 5% administration fee on donations, which are 100% tax-deductible.
